Blue, white, orange, light blue, purple and brown: These are the colors of the six new ropeway lines in La Paz and El Alto. César Dockweiler, director of Empresa Estatal de Transporte por Cable 'Mi Teleférico', and Hanno Ulmer, member of the Board of Directors of Doppelmayr, sealed the deal on the new major project with the official signing of the contract on Thursday, March 5. Over the next four years, another 20 kilometers of ropeway line will be constructed. Just like the three already existing ropeways built during the first phase, the new lines will consist of detachable gondola lifts equipped with 10-passenger cabins. This second phase is an important step for the infrastructure and mobility of La Paz and El Alto.
Until 2019 six new ropeway lines will be constructed in Bolivia, which will not only bring new mobility to the seat of government La Paz but also to the neighboring city of El Alto.
The existing network with an overall length of around 10 kilometers will be expanded by roughly 20 kilometers and 23 stations, which will also include direct links between the individual lines. In the same manner as for the existing lines, Doppelmayr will hand over the installations turnkey ready – besides various studies and calculations, this includes the complete design, production, ropeway equipment, assembly, logistics, staff trainings and a lot more.
A schedule for the project that is planned to take four years has already been issued: The official start-up of the Línea Azul (blue line) and Línea Blanco (white line) is planned to take place in 2017. Naranja (orange) and Celeste (light blue) will follow in 2018, and the Línea Morada (purple line) and Línea Café (brown line) will mark the completion of the project in 2019.
The first phase of the construction of the world's biggest network of urban ropeways started in 2012 and was completed in 2014 – the three lines are operating very successfully and have surpassed all expectations. They have met with an exceptionally positive response from the population, the commuters and also tourists – more than 16 million trips recorded account for it. This is why 'Mi Teleférico' now launches the second phase together with Doppelmayr.
