DCC gains the biggest order of the company's history at the airport of Oakland

DCC Doppelmayr Cable Car, a member of the Doppelmayr Group, was awarded the contract for the construction of an Automatic People Mover (APM) in Oakland, California, USA. The system will be an integrated part of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) and connect the Oakland International Airport with the Coliseum train station, an important junction of the city of Oakland. In cooperation with the consortium Flatiron/Parsons that is responsible for the construction, DCC will build a 5.1km long system with a total order volume of USD 361 m. (EUR 265 m.). The order share of the APM equipment provided by DCC amounts to USD 166 m. (EUR 122 m.). The start of the construction is scheduled for the end of 2010 and the completion and public operation are planned for 2014. Furthermore, DCC gained the contract for the operation of the system for 20 years with a contract value of USD 100 m. Along with the development and construction of APM systems, the operation of those systems is one of the core competences of DCC.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is the biggest principal operator of public transportation services in the San Francisco Bay area and awarded the contract to a consortium with involvement of the Doppelmayr Cable Car GmbH. The APM system will connect the Oakland International Airport and the Coliseum train station in the city of Oakland and close a critical gap in the short-range transit in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The CABLE Liner Pinched Loop System with a track length of 5.1 km and a capacity of approximately 1,500 passengers per hour in each direction runs at a maximum speed of 50 km/h (14 m/s). The system consists of four trains with 3 cars each and will be the backbone of the Oakland Hegenberger Corridor.

In the awarding of the contract, the DCC system achieved high scores against strong international competitors thanks to the simple and well-proven technology, the cost effectiveness and the environmental compatibility.

Besides the recently completed systems in Las Vegas and Venice, DCC is currently working on two more CABLE Liner Shuttle systems in Caracas, Venezuela, and Doha, Qatar.

Quote:

The acceptance of the tender for the project in Oakland adds to past successes and provides comfirmation that our technology is ready for critcal urban transport applications. With our rope-propelled systems, the user does not notice a difference to considerably more expensive systems. The owner, however, benefits from the safety, the reliability, low costs and the low maintenance expenses all provided by a partner with an exceptional track record
