For Doppelmayr, one of the biggest projects in the company’s history is entering its next phase in La Paz, Bolivia. The second line belonging to the world’s biggest urban ropeway network and known as the Línea Amarilla (yellow line) was officially opened by President Evo Morales on September 15, 2014. With the Línea Roja (red line) already counting 3.51 million rides since it opened at the end of May, the yellow line is on track to meet with equal success. The detachable gondola lift is almost 3.74 km long and links El Alto with the southern center of La Paz. Its base station provides the connecting point to the third (green) line – the Línea Verde – which is scheduled to open in October.

On September 15, 2014, the inhabitants of El Alto and La Paz yet again had cause for celebration when President Evo Morales inaugurated the Línea Amarilla ropeway line in an official ceremony. The new route is expected to echo the success of the Línea Roja which has met with an exceptionally positive response from the population – and has already recorded three and a half million rides after just three months in operation. César Cocarico, governor of La Paz, complemented on the ropeway project: “The ropeway connects cities, lives, families. It has become a part of the identity of La Paz and El Alto.” In his inauguration speech, President Evo Morales expressed his pride: “La Paz–El Alto has become a model city.”

In its yellow cabins offering room for ten people, the new ropeway line can carry 3,000 passengers per hour and direction. At 3.74 kilometers, this is the longest of the three installations. During the trip on the Línea Amarilla, passengers ascend a height of 665 vertical meters. The route extends from the Estación Libertador up to the Parque Mirador at an elevation of approximately 4,075 meters. The base station of the Línea Amarilla is adjacent to the top station of the Línea Verde which will go as far as the southern area of the city. This line is due to celebrate its grand opening in October.

The three ropeways will link the neighboring urban centers of La Paz and El Alto, and are the country’s first urban ropeways. Each of the installations is up to four kilometers in length and, with an hourly capacity of 3,000 passengers per direction, will significantly alleviate the congested road network and make life far easier for commuters. The combined length of all three ropeways is roughly 10 km and encompasses 11 stations, making it the world’s biggest urban ropeway network. May 30, 2014 saw the official opening of the first of the three lines, the 2.3 km long Línea Roja, by Bolivia’s President Evo Morales.
