After two challenging years, Doppelmayr Holding SE reports positive performance for the fiscal year 2021/22. The company completed numerous ropeway installations, material transport systems and intralogistics solutions with customers worldwide, achieving sales revenues of 886 million euros. This represents an increase of roughly 16% over the previous year.
The fiscal year 2021/22 was shaped by numerous major ropeway construction projects. Customers worldwide invested in the expansion of their mobility offers – in both the tourism and urban sectors. The company was also in demand in the area of intralogistics, where it successfully completed over 60 individual projects. In comparison with the previous year, the sales revenues of Doppelmayr Holding SE rose by 16% to 886 million euros.
Cutting-edge technology for mountain destinations
In 2021, Doppelmayr was honored with the Innovation Award of the Province of Vorarlberg and the Vorarlberg Economic Chamber for its innovation AURO – the autonomous ropeway. Only a few months later, the Valisera Gondola went into service in the Silvretta Montafon ski area. This is the first AURO installation in Austria and the second worldwide. AURO (Autonomous Ropeway Operation) refers to ropeways that are largely unmanned and can be run without station personnel. They are state of the art and impress with smart networking technology as well as maximum safety. Cameras and sensors monitor the ropeway – particularly cabin boarding and disembarkation. “Innovations like AURO arise from our aspiration to create new possibilities for our customers with modern ropeways and to create the mobility of the future. This technology will also bring huge benefits for operators in the urban context,” explains Thomas Pichler, executive director of Doppelmayr Holding SE.
Comfort in winter – bike transport in summer
Kancamagus 8 at Loon Mountain Resort (USA) is an 8-seater chairlift belonging to the D-Line generation. Equipped with seat heating and bubbles, it offers comfort in all weathers during winter operations. In the interests of the year-round use of infrastructures, the customer is also running the chairlift in the summer as a feeder lift to the bike trails at Loon Mountain. Bike carriers are used for this purpose, ensuring the lift not only brings riders but also their bikes safely up the mountain.
Urban mobility in the UK, Mexico and Israel
Doppelmayr handed over three urban ropeway solutions to customers in fiscal 2021/22. The Luton DART is a roughly two-kilometer-long Cable Liner that runs between the railroad station Luton Airport Parkway and the terminal for London Luton Airport. This gives air travelers a faster, more reliable and more sustainable alternative to the bus shuttle and private cars. The Cablebús Línea 1 is a high-capacity ropeway connection that provides access from the district of Cuautepec to one of the biggest transport hubs in Mexico City. In Haifa, students and staff at the University of Haifa and the Technion – Israel’s biggest research institution – benefit from an urban ropeway. The 10-passenger gondola known as the Rakavlit extends the local transit offer from the centrally located HaMiFratz rail and bus terminal to the campus on Mount Carmel and achieves a time saving of up to 25 minutes.
Efficient material transport
Alongside its reputation in the field of passenger transport, Doppelmayr has also made a name for itself in material handling. One of its core products is RopeCon® – a combination of proven ropeway engineering and continuous conveyor technology. Fiscal 2021/22 saw a further expansion of the Booysendal Link in South Africa. This RopeCon® is deployed as a reliable and efficient system for transporting platinum ore.
The Bardon Hill RopeCon® in the UK is used as an environmentally friendly solution for rehabilitating an exhausted quarry pit. As an alternative to countless truck journeys, it transports extracted overburden material used to restore the landscape.
Growing trend toward digitalization
The Doppelmayr Group is continuously investing in its portfolio of digital products and services. One example is the resort management platform known as clair, which enables the efficient planning of tasks and resources as well as the condition-based maintenance of all installations throughout the resort. This and many other projects are the focus of the company’s digital expansion.
Success factor employees
Innovations only arise from the many years of know-how and the high commitment of employees. Doppelmayr therefore promotes close, autonomous collaboration in international teams. Continuous training and development initiatives are used along with attractive apprentice training to address the challenges posed by the shortage of skilled personnel and new technologies. Flexible working models are aimed at combining the requirements of the current labor market with the needs of Doppelmayr.
Outlook for fiscal year 2022/23
The order position for fiscal 2022/23 is very gratifying. In North America in particular, the ropeway sector is seeing a huge surge in investment in ski resorts. Installations are being upgraded to state of the art and passenger comfort further increased. The implementation of ropeway projects is also gathering pace in other regions of the world. The recent contract for another ropeway line in Mexico City is a positive sign in favor of sustainable urban mobility using ropeways.
