On September 4, 2015, Doppelmayr laid the foundation stone in Vietnam for what will be the world’s longest aerial ropeway to date in a single section. For the construction of the spectacular 3S lift, Sun Group Corporation will be placing its trust in the know-how of the world market leader, as it has already done on numerous other projects. The new ropeway will connect the islands Phú Quốc and Hòn Thơm to the west of the mainland in southern Vietnam. An attractive vacation hotspot is being created in the area, offering a wide range of leisure activities and accommodation. The trip will be an experience in itself as the ropeway, which will be almost eight kilometers long, is to carry guests over the sea.

The islands in southern Vietnam are already a popular destination for visitors. In two years’ time, a new means of transport will link the islands. The foundation stone for the world record ropeway was laid on September 4, 2015 as part of an official ceremony, where guests included Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng.

The Hòn Thơm tricable gondola from Doppelmayr will not only be the longest lift of its type, but also the longest single-section aerial ropeway ever built. Its route will cross the sea and extend almost eight kilometers in length. Towers of up to 160 meters in height will also be erected on the two islands between Phú Quốc and Hòn Thơm.

The comfortable CWA cabins offer ample space for 30 passengers. The lighting and PA systems inside the cabins are powered by an innovative carriage wheel generator. The recovery concept developed by Doppelmayr will also be incorporated in the design of the new ropeway. This guarantees the safety of the passengers in the event that a cabin becomes stranded on the line.

Sun Group Corporation has already built numerous ropeway installations in collaboration with the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group. Last year, one of the detachable gondola lifts – the Bana Big Ropeway – achieved two entries in the Guinness World Records. It was the longest aerial ropeway of its kind to date in one section as well as climbing the greatest vertical height. Two major projects are currently under construction: a 3S lift stretching over six kilometers on Mount Fansipan – Vietnam’s highest peak – plus a spectacular reversible aerial tramway in Ha Long Bay. The construction work is going ahead at full steam and making good progress, with completion scheduled for the first half of 2016. Contracts for two further detachable gondola lifts were awarded jointly with the contract for the new Hòn Thơm 3S lift.
