Ropeways – an effective add-on and relief for urban transportation systems
The Future of Mobility is the theme of the international trade fair for transport technology that runs from September 20 through 23, 2022, in Berlin. Among the exhibitors will be Vorarlberg-based ropeway manufacturer Doppelmayr, who has already implemented a series of inner-city multimodal mobility concepts using ropeways as an integrated mode of transport.
Ropeways and public transport – do the two go together? “Absolutely,” says Reinhard Fitz, head of international business development at Doppelmayr: “Ropeways are a meaningful addition to the multimodal mobility mix of progressive urban transportation systems.” At its exhibition stand in Hall 2.2/450, Doppelmayr will be presenting mobility prospects using cutting-edge ropeway technology and showcasing, among other things, international ropeway projects that have been integrated into urban and multimodal solutions.
Transportation needs a rethink
Urban mobility is no longer bi- or trimodal – mobility has to be thought of in multimodal terms! This is a statement that has not long been a matter of course. Mobility, along with ensuring its continuous development and provision, has become key to the development capability of our cities. The transport systems of large and even smaller conurbations have to be reconceptualized, made more flexible and even more mutually compatible. This is not just a question of optimal service frequencies and ever greater investments, but above all the dynamics of changing needs and the new requirements that result from them. It is therefore important to find solutions that usefully combine the benefits of the individual modes of transport with regard to their availability, connectivity, costs and their potential for further development.
Urban airspace – taking mobility to a new level?
With its wide range of urban ropeway projects, Doppelmayr has already gained a wealth of experience in multimodal linkage, i.e. providing additions to different forms of road and rail transport. While the airspace in this country remains virtually unutilized for local public transit systems, ropeways have already been successfully integrated into the transport networks of core cities in Asia as well as in Central and South America.
This is achieved with exceptional multimodal connectivity when it comes to interfacing with many different forms of transport, such as in Mexico City, La Paz (BOL), Portland (Oregon/USA) or Singapore. In the meantime, however, ropeways are also gaining a foothold in European conurbations, where they add to or relieve local public transit networks. Examples here include the Câble 1 line to be built in the Paris metropolitan area as well as temporary projects like the ropeway at the Floriade Expo 2022 in Almere and the ropeway across the Rhine in Koblenz, which proved so popular that it has now become a permanent installation.
Mobility for the Future
Doppelmayr will be providing an exciting discussion forum for anyone who is interested in this topic with a mobility talk at its exhibition stand at 4 pm on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. Areas to be discussed include the requirements of a transport operator to be met by the mobility of the future from the operator’s perspective as well as the challenges involved in the planning and implementation of transport infrastructure projects with multimodal approaches from the planner’s perspective.
