The official ground-breaking ceremony for Phase II of the world's largest urban ropeway network was held in La Paz - El Alto on Saturday 23 May, 2015 at 4 pm local time. The ceremony marked the inauguration of the first construction site of this major project just two months after signing of the contract. The President of Bolivia, Evo Morales, the Governor of La Paz, César Cocarico, and Mayors Zacarías Maquera (El Alto) and Omar Rocha (La Paz) attended the ceremony, which took place at the Rio Seco Station in the centre of El Alto. This makes the Línea Azul (the Blue Line) the first of a total of six new ropeways lines scheduled for Phase II to enter the construction phase. The line is due to commence operation along with the Línea Blanca (the White Line) as early as 2017.
