The Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group has closed a very successful financial year. In comparison with the previous years, sales revenues were increased by 5.7% to 846 million euros. This was possible thanks to winter customers making large investments, major projects in growing markets as well as the great commitment of the employees.

In the financial year 2017/2018, winter tourism was again the largest contributor to the sales revenues of Doppelmayr/Garaventa. Two thirds of all ropeways built worldwide were realized in the winter segment. Ski regions all over the world have invested in their ropeway infrastructure, the comfort of their guests, and their service offer. The importance of each and every individual ropeway project is made evident by the revenue share of the alpine countries Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy: In total, their contribution in the financial year 2017/2018 amounted to more than 40% of the total sales revenues.

Record-setting projects in Europe

Among the large number of projects that Doppelmayr/Garaventa built in the financial years 2017/2018, there are a couple of milestones in ropeway engineering: In Switzerland, the world's steepest funicular railway makes the climb up to Stoos since December 2017. It compensates grades of up to 110%. For the development of this innovative carrier concept, Garaventa won the 2018 Innovation Award of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Central Switzerland. The new reversible aerial tramway on the Zugspitze achieves three world records: the greatest overall vertical rise with 1,945 meters, the tallest lattice tower rising up 127 meters and the longest unsupported rope span of 3,213 meters.

Emerging region Asia

The development in Asia is a very pleasing one with a revenue share of 21%. There, ropeway installations in the point of interest (POI) sector are in demand, in particular in countries such as China or Vietnam. In Vietnam, a new 3S ropeway connects the vacations islands Phu Quoc and Hon Thom. At a length of 7,900 meters, it has entered the Guinness World Records as the longest tricable ropeway in the world. In China, Doppelmayr/Garaventa has realized the country's first tricable ropeway. It crosses the national park of Lushan, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of China's most famous cultural countrysides.

The Doppelmayr/Garaventa teams also worked hard on new installations for winter applications in China. For the Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022, Doppelmayr/Garaventa was awarded the contracts for the construction of nine ropeways. "Asia shows a very positive development for us at the moment. There is tremendous potential for ropeways in all fields of application," emphasizes CEO Michael Doppelmayr.

Productive companies of the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group

The team of Doppelmayr Cable Car completed a Cable Liner at the Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow. The installation links the northern and southern terminals and played a major in role in ensuring the mobility of the passengers during the World Cup 2018 in Russia. Doppelmayr Transport Technology built a high-performance material transport system in Turkey: The material ropeway in the underground copper mine Cerattepe is designed for both the transport of mined copper ore in special material buckets as well as the transport of the mine staff.

In the financial year 2017/2018, Doppelmayr/Garaventa has affiliated new companies with the Group. The Frey Group brings know-how from their worldwide activities in the area of ropeway control systems to the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group. LTW Intralogistics reinforced their software competences through the acquisition of the software company Metasyst Informatik GmbH located in Vienna.

The future brings growth in new markets

Doppelmayr/Garaventa looks into the future with great confidence. "We expect a stable business in Central Europe. We anticipate growth in Asia and South America. We consistently pursue the path we have taken to consolidate our service network," states Michael Doppelmayr. The Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group aims to strengthen their core markets and create chances in new markets with cutting-edge ropeway technology and solutions custom-tailored to customers' needs.
